An Attitude Problem in MMA: Jorge Masvidal Assaulted Colby Covington Outside a Restaurant in Miami
Jorge Masvidal assaulted Colby Covington outside of a restaurant in Miami last night. Colby was enjoying a night out with the ever popular Nelk Boys (most known for their trump interview that got banned from YouTube). Jorge found out where Colby was due to social media posts by the Nelk Boys and their fans. Jorge took this information, drove to where Colby was, and assaulted him. The worst part is, Jorge Masvidal is being coveted by some for what he did.
The two main reasons I’ve seen for people supporting Jorge Masvidal are…
Colby crossed the line by talking about Masvidal’s family and kids
Jorge is from the streets. This is real life shit and this is how it gets dealt with where he’s from. He told you it was “site on scene”
So what did Colby say about Jorge’s kids? Colby said “He’s a deadbeat dad, he doesn’t even talk to his kids. He’s tried to erase the mother of his children and his wife still legally on paper – Marisa Masvidal from the history of the internet.”
“He scrubbed her clean. Oh, the only person that says that’s the wife of his kids is his manager’s sister now. How demonic is that? That’s so despicable. It’s disgusting”
Okay, that was harsh, but let’s break down exactly what he said.
“He’s a dead beat dad, he doesn’t even talk to his kids.” Okay now Colby does bring up Masvidal’s kids, but they are not the subject of that sentence. The subject of a sentence is the part of the sentence that contains the person or thing performing the action. So in that sentence the subject would be “he”. The “he” Colby is referring to is Jorge Masvidal. Jorge Masvidal is the subject because “he” doesn’t talk to his kids.
Just because Colby wasn’t talking about Masvidal’s kids doesn’t mean it wasn’t offensive. Colby was talking about Jorge’s relationship with his kids, which could be even more hurtful. Especially if what Colby said is true. I don’t know if it is true, but let’s pretend for a minute that it is. Masvidal may feel badly that he hasn’t been there for his kids and Colby embarrassed him on national TV. I can totally see why that would drive you to want to fight someone outside of the octagon. But it’s also nothing to be applauded.
Some people have said that it’s the same as when Khabib jumped out of the octagon against Conor and started a fight with Conor’s team. Not Khabibs finest moment, but it is also not the same as this situation. Conor truly did talk about Khabibs wife and religion. “Your wife is a towel mate” in that sentence “wife” is the subject. Khabib was defending the honor of his wife and father (who Conor also bashed multiple times). Jorge and his fans can try and hide behind the guise that this was about defending his family, but go ahead and breakdown the sentences. It was never about his family. It was always about Jorge. Jorge was always the subject
The second argument is much easier to breakdown. “Jorge is from the streets. This is how shit gets dealt with”. This attitude is what is holding the sport of mixed martial arts back. People cheering for guys like Jorge or Nate Diaz because they act hard. News flash, it’s not cool to be a gangster. I know pop culture, music and movies want you to think otherwise, but maybe spend some times on the “streets” and see what shits really like. Nothing about it is cool.
I’m a firefighter/paramedic in an urban city. I go to gunshots, stabbing and fights on a daily basis. I actually spend a lot of my time on the “streets”. Yes, it’s in uniform, but for those 24 hours I’m part of that community. I’ve built real relationships with people who live there, good and bad. The so called “gangsters” that share the same attitude of “site on scene” are no one to look up to. They developed this hard exterior as a defense mechanism. They have a lot to hide and a lot to be ashamed of. So what do they do? They hide it behind a hard exterior. They put on a show, even to themselves, because once you crack that hard exterior you find a very very sad man.
Now that’s a bit of a tangent, but I’ve seen countless arguments on Twitter about “that’s how shit really is in the streets”. No bro, this is how it really is. That hard dude that puts on a show for everyone ends up getting hurt. He continues to act hard on scene cussing and talking about getting revenge with his boys. Then he gets into my ambulance and those ambulance doors close. You know what that tough man does? He cries. He cries whether the injury is serious or not. Almost every single person, every single time. As “hard” as they come. When the doors close and it’s just you it’s harder to lie. It’s harder to put on an act. That’s real shit.
I don’t know if that applies to Jorge Masvidal at all. Like I said I don’t know if any of what Colby said about Jorge is actually true. The subject of this argument is not to Jorge himself, but to uneducated fans. It is the uneducated fans that think that attitude is cool. I wanted to show you that it is not. The real hard ones will admit their fears. GSP said he was scared before every fight. Now that is a “gangster”.
Regardless of what is true and what is not, it is never okay to react in violence. Jorge said during the lead up to the fight that he was going to make Colby pay for what he said in the octagon and get royalties off of it. When that didn’t happen he resulted in “street justice”. Street justice has no place in the sport of martial arts. This all seems like a sad cry from a sore loser. A loser that doesn’t want the publics last image of him to be getting his ass kicked for 25 minutes. A publicity stunt by a guy surrounded by yes men. A guy who wants you to see that hard exterior. An exterior that is cracked when those cameras turn off, the yes men go home and the insecurities creep in.
If none of what Colby said is true then I’m not sure why Masvidal got so upset. lt Just makes people like me assume the worst. I was writing about how his actions were portrayed by me personally. Just like some of you portrayed them as badass……
Or it may just be an even bigger publicity stunt by both of them to continue to drive numbers to their fights. Who knows how far the WWE drama goes . Who knows what’s real and what is fake now a days.
