Another week, another recipe. This one will really get the people going. Lumpia is quite possibly the best party food in the world. Being from Connecticut originally, I never even heard of Lumpia. I moved down to Virginia Beach and due to the big navy presence, they have a big Philippino community. This is where I was introduced to lumpia. They are so simple, but so good. They are basically little thin egg rolls. I think I could honestly eat 100 of them and the best part is they are not hard to make. Show off for your friends and be the lumpia guy
Ingredients
Lumpia
Lumpia wrappers. You may need to go to an Asian grocery store to find these, but it’s worth it. First off those stores are awesome and having the flakey thin lumpia wrapper yields the best results. If you don’t have time for that, substitute regular egg roll wrappers. These kind be found at your local grocery store and for some reason they are usually by the mushrooms. No clue why, but you just watch they will be by the mushrooms
Ground Pork
Green cabbage
Carrots
Green onions
Garlic
Soy sauce
Sesame oil
Vegetable oil
Red pepper flakes (don’t be soft)
Sweet Chili dipping sauce. You can get fancy and make this. It’s not very hard, but I’ve found that a lot of the store bought sweet chili sauces are just as good. You’re working hard on these lumpia. Give yourself a break and buy the sauce
First things first you are going to want to make your lumpia filling. Chop up all of your veggies. I like mine to be a real fine chop, but if you like bigger chunks that’s fine too. Not too big though ya psycho we still got wrap these things. Once all veggies are chopped throw em in a frying pan with a little sesame oil and soy sauce and sweat them down.
While your veggies are sweating you can brown your ground pork. Also put some sesame oil and soy sauce in the pork along with some red pepper flakes.
Once the pork is cooked through you can mix your veggies and your pork together. This is going to be the filling for your lumpia. The lumpia themselves have no added sweetness other than what comes naturally from the veggies. The filling should be a bit salty. That is why they go perfect with the sweet chili dipping sauce. Now you might be ready to jump into making your lumpia. Let your filling cool down a bit. You are wrapping with your hands and it’s just so much nicer to not burn yourself
Now that your filling has cooled you can begin wrapping your lumpia. Wrapping your lumpia is a bit like an envelope or a cigar. You don’t want to use too much filling. It will be less than you think. You can leave the ends open or close them up. The best way to show you how to roll is a video. I’m going to attach the video that I watched to learn myself. She’s better than me. In the video she has raw pork as her filling. I’ve never tried not cooking it first. I’d be interested to see how that comes out though. For now use the proven way and cook everything first. Don’t want anyone getting sick and missing the fights. LUMPIA WRAPPING VIDEO
now that your lumpia are wrapping you fry them up. You can do this right in a frying pan. Poor enough oil so that your lumpia are fully submerged. It helps to have a deep pan, but look cooking is adaptive. If you don’t have a deep pan then you might just have to flip your lumpia if they are fully submerged. No big deal.
once lumpia are golden brown and crunchy, put them on a plate with a paper towel or on a wire rack to cool. Serve with sweet chili sauce and enjoy!!! Let’s win some money this weekend! Foods expensive
